I’m a writer, community organizer, and media & policy advocate for public health issues. My focus is the social determinants of health – looking upstream at culture, policies, governance and other institutional mechanisms driving health. Income inequality, racial/ethnic and gender bias are part of the picture.
I write to demystify, make connections, and add context so that health information is useful and meaningful for communities.
My background includes work as a prevention educator, community organizer, project coordinator, and executive director of a collective impact health organization, Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities. At ACHC, I coordinated the inter-sector work of 14 grassroots prevention coalitions.
In January 2014, I helped found Regional Anti-Drug Education and Outreach (RADEO), a Michigan nonprofit. Currently, I work with Michigan Alcohol Policy as well as local community coalitions. I’m a conference speaker for groups including Michigan Institute for Prevention and Treatment Education and contributor on public health topics for the Detroit News, Social Work Helper, and other publications.
I’m originally from Savannah, Georgia, but I’ve lived in the Detroit area most of my life and I’m a graduate of Wayne State University. Reach me at email@example.com or follow me on Twitter: @mfarenger
